Optometrists are being invited to take part in a research project to validate an online referral guide designed to assist practitioners when encountering melanocytic lesions.

The website - eyetumours.com is described by its founders, consultant ophthalmologists Professor Bertil Damato and Carl Groenewald, as an online tumour atlas which, unlike traditional texts, allows practitioners to identify lesions by colour and location rather than by diagnosis.

Optometrists who participate will be required to grade 50 images of melanocytic fundus lesions using the referral guide. Participants will be sent a CD containing the images along with instructions on how to take part. Responses will be analysed anonymously. The project has the full approval of the College of Optometrists and is supported by an IPRO grant.
