Stone, past master of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, is setting sail from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria on November 23 in the Nicky Tam II, a Contest 55 cutter rigged yacht with a crew of five and hopes to arrive in St Lucia in mid-December after sailing some 3,000 miles.
Optometrist Mike Wheeler, a director of National Eyecare Group, will monitor the crossing by satellite and welcomes pledge donations, big or small, to his email address mcwnegaol.com marked 'The Captain's Challenge'.
Wheeler said the largest donation would have the use of one of the company's villas on Tenerife for a week, while the person who can best estimate the distance sailed would have the use of a luxury holiday apartment in Falmouth for one week. National Eyecare Group is helping to sponsor Clive Stone in his bid to cross the Atlantic in his yacht in support of Fight for Sight.
