This award recognises the practice that can demonstrate the most effective use of technology. This could be for the direct clinical needs of the patient, or the efficient operation of the practice for the patient's benefit.

The judges will look for evidence of a range of technologies including tonometry, perimetry (visual field analysers), retinal and anterior digital imaging, corneal topography, pachymetry and computerised test charts, in conjunction with practice management and patient software programmes.

Brian Bowles of Grafton Optical said he was proud to sponsor the optician Awards. 'As an independent company, Grafton is able to supply the latest technology from manufacturers around the world. From the Medmont corneal topographer from Australia, slit lamps from Japan, combination stand units from Italy, to Reichert tonometers and Eyescape retinal and anterior imaging from the US.'

He said Grafton had noticed that five main areas in the consulting room are creating the most interest. These are:

*Computerised Test Charts - we offer the Reichert ClearChart 'all in one' and Grafton's own SixSix which can be purchased complete or software-only
*Retinal Image Capture - we offer 8.2 Mega Pixel new Canon Systems and upgrades to existing Topcon and Canon Non-Mydriatic Camera with the Eyescape Clinical Software package
*Anterior Slit Lamp 8.2 Mega Pixel Image Capture Systems
*Corneal Topography - we offer the leading Ortho-K Topographer from Medmont and a value for money topographer from Shin Nippon
*Along with the finest range of combination units manufactured exclusively for Grafton.

Relcon Software joins Grafton this year as a co-sponsor. It has developed one of the most comprehensive ranges of software on the market for independent practices and small groups.

The Focus software offers everything from patient record, appointments, recall, Rx, dispensing, stock management, bar coding, till, ordering, to accounts integration and fundus imaging.

Focus has been developed to deliver real, measurable business benefits to practices wanting to make the most of computer technology.
Recent developments include the launch of a full Clinical Records system, for the true paperless practice. Designed from the outset to be a totally integrated system, Focus is suitable for any practice that wishes to increase net profit, increase efficiency and increase the quality of service offered to patients.

It has been designed to be used by all staff members, whatever their level of computer experience, and has a host of features designed to deliver both commercial and clinical benefits.
