An ingredient found in red wine, some fruits and peanuts has been shown to stop new vessel growth in the eye, providing hope that it could be useful in fighting blindness.
Researchers at Washington University in St Louis conducted experiments to prove how Resveratrol was able to reverse new vessel growth in the retina. A report from the American Journal of Pathology quoted the research's senior investigator Rajendra S Apte as saying he believed Resveratrol could be effective in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity.
Anyone assuming they can combat such diseases by drinking red wine will be disappointed. Apte said the experiments required doses of Resveratrol that would exceed those found in many bottles of wine.
