The Wiseman Memorial Fund, which provides help for those undertaking optical training and research, has extended its remit to provide benevolent support for optical technicians.
Following an increasing number of requests from technicians, the fund's trustees have added a clause to the charity's objectives to enable help to be offered.
In a letter to members of the FMO, chairman of the fundraising committee Frank Norville asked companies to pledge support. He said his own company, the Norville Group, had already pledged £5,000 and he was hoping a total of £50,000 could be raised to create a National Optical Workers Benevolent Fund within the Max Wiseman Memorial fund.
Donations from the retailsector would also be welcome on 020 7298 5123.
