You get the opportunity to do a lot of things as a journalist, some good, some not so good.
This week things fell into the former with the launch of the adidas Evil Eye half rim launched along with a mountain biking day in Cannock Chase.
If there was ever a day designed to test out active prescription eyewear this day was it.
The morning started with the rain pouring down and the skies leaden.
The party of optical folk huddled inside a forest lodge out of the rain while the product was presented and a talk given on vision in mountain biking given by Cycle Active.
Both of the talks were interesting and whetted thae apetite for the later session which would see the assembeld opticians taken through their paces on the bikes and see the eyewear put through its paces too.
As we headed out on the bikes the weather monetarily cleared up to be followed by colder air and bright sun. The cycling experts for the day provided some guidance on mountaining biking and vision which was well recieved, interesting and pretty useful too.
After lunch an elite group of riders headed back out to the Follow the Dog trail for some higher speeed full-on fun. Needless to say this editor was amongst that band.
Along with the variable lighht conditions the Evil Eye's lenses also had to cope with mud, steam and snow. The frames with the harsh ride and the cold wind. And the riders with stayiong on the bikes. The product performed much better than the riders. I was also wearing a prescription insert behind the lenses that did trap a little moisture but all in all the ventillation system seemed to work quite well and the lenses remained fog free-ish. During the heaviest of the snow I had to wipe the lens to clear the flakes of snow and mud and the surface cleared very well indeed. But the proof of the pudding was that the product stayed on all the way round and I wanted to wear it all the way round to the finish.
They say that cycling has become the new golf for many businesspeople and if this is the case I am happy to partake. Give me a muddy track rather than a golf course any day, so long as I have the same bike and a pair of Evil Eyes to keep the mud out.
