A week of news - Google Glass pinpoints optics

Joe Ayling

Confirmation that Google Glass will be sold alongside a range of ophthalmic spectacle frames comes as little surprise to those following the product's evolution.

What is perhaps less obvious is why the augmented reality device remains in such small circulation for a limited number of 'explorers' in the US.

Is the limited supply designed to build up more intrigue among fans or simply because the product isn't quite ready for a wider circulation?

Recent issues faced by explorers both behind the wheel and at the cinema illustrate how wearable displays are making their way into the public, albeit with a few teething problems.

Despite the wide reach of Google though, and tendency of rival Apple to release its inventions to all corners of the globe, Google Glass is not available in the UK.

Nevertheless, practitioners here look on with interest as collections incorporating Google Glass appear across the Atlantic, particularly with VSP Global, which arrived on the UK scene last year, confirming its role helping the provision of prescription lenses for the new technology.

Indeed, optometry courses of the future could require an augmented reality displays module, and another question arising in this week's edition is whether the University of Hertfordshire should be part of that conversation.

Regardless, the continued entry of trainees into the profession means expanding the scope of optometry is a must.
