Are we missing a trick with geek chic?

Chris Bennett

gere.jpg First of all let me apologise for the tea stain on this picture.......of Richard Gere. The reason I have posted it is to demonstrate the wonderful bifocals the greying babe-magnet is wearing. I was originally shown this picture ( it's a cutting from the Telegraph) to demonstrate how out of touch the public is with modern eyewear. But I think we are missing a trick. I have three sons and two of them wear glasses. In at least one case this is purely because I am the editor of Optician. My older son (15) really does need to wear glasses and he enjoys doing so. I have often suggested he might like to try contact lenses as he fences and plays cricket, but 'no Dad,' comes the reply I like wearing glasses. 'What about OrthoK son?' I say. 'I like wearing glasses ,' he says, they make me look intelligent. He even goes out of his way to choose styles on the retro side and he's even started eying up some of my old pairs. I must admit to being a little worried that this stance could mark him out but one by one his friends are starting to appear at the door with their specs on too. let's hope its a trend. I believe the same principle is true of Mr Gere. The man once only famous for showing his bum on film wants to be taken seriously.
