Autumn is a time of change and as the season's mists and mellow fruitfulness are blown away by Hurricane Gonzalo many others will dread the other seasonal alteration -- the clocks going back.

British Summertime, now Daylight Saving Time was introduced in the early 1900s to get people out of bed in the morning so more of the day could be spent productively. But however the clocks are organised Autumn means there is less daylight to go around.

This poses problems for those suffering age-related diseases and poses many other safety risks. This was brought into sharp contrast for me  as I helped an elderly neighbour with her wheelie bin. In the summer her sloping drive is no problem but when it's covered in leaves and the light is fading it's a different matter.
