Technology and change have become the annual watchwords as the calendar is replaced and New Year resolutions made.

Where, once upon a time, watery-eyed reflection and nostalgia were the order of the day for Hogmanay we are now encouraged to peddle ever faster on the hamster-wheel of growth and profit.

The great and good pick up these themes in their predictions for the coming 12 months (news) and if their thoughts bear any relation to reality we are in for an exciting 2016.

Technology has tantalised the crystal ball gazers for years but its application has been limited. Instrumentation could play so many roles in optometry and retail optics. 2016 may go down in history as the year of the optometrist-free prescription, but it has to be on the patients’ terms.
