Chris Bennett: Optical bodies should state their position on free eye exams

Banning free or cheap ‘eye tests’ has been suggested in the past but this prescient and pertinent call is repeated again this week (news) by the new voice of reason in optics – the  AIO is both.

The Association of Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians’ star seems in the ascendant at the moment and the organisation certainly seems to have struck a chord with the rump of quality independents left in the market.

The call comes on the back of comments direct from the government side in its negotiations with the Optical Fees Negotiating Committee over the increase in optical fees and grants. The government, through NHS England, made the point that eye tests, were available for less than the NHS GOS fee and spectacles obtainable for £25.
