Chris Bennett: The first White Van Man of Spring

Sight Care Conference throws up interesting indicator

White vanWhite Van Man and opticians rarely turn up in the same sentence but delegates to this year’s Sight Care Conference heard a unique take on economic activity which brought these two odd bedfellows together.

In his introduction (see news) chairman and Essex practitioner Gavin Rebello picked up on a mood of confidence among those present as he reported an unusual Key Performance Indicator. He told delegates how those in Essex understand that the prevalence of White Van Man is a sure indicator of boom times. He gleefully reported nearly being knocked down twice last Friday by tearaway Transits whose drivers, mobile phones pressed to their faces, rushed from job to job.

Over recent months businesses, and practitioners around the country have reported a mixed picture on the health of the economy.  The good news from this conference was that Rebello’s audience agreed with his assessment of the retail business. This was confirmed by real-time poll among the group. Voting, on the keypads supplied, they agreed that they felt more confident about the coming months.

Sight Care’s speakers went on to describe how practices can make the most of this new found optimism and Rebello warned practices about not getting caught up in the rush to buy. Practitioners should also be wary of the opposite. Don’t get bogged down in negativity. If people want to buy let’s encourage them.
