By the time most people read this Scotland will have voted on independence (16.06.14). That debate certainly seems to have occupied minds north of the Border, but fear not, there is still time to act on National Eye Health Week which starts on Monday.
The NEHW website's list of what is going on catalogues a range of activity and the South East looks to be leading the way. This region boasts 14 events against just two listed in Scotland but there are sure to be many more that didn't make it to the list.
As ever it is the individual practitioners that make events like NEHW real. In Scotland that means local optom Lloyd Griffiths holding an ask the expert session in Elgin while in Glasgow Pinders Opticians is holding a children's day. The busy south east sees everything from cake sales and coffee mornings to the most intruiging quiz at the Reliance Fish Bar in Gravesend. In between are carrot walks in Birmingham, school assemblies in Chester and spectacle cleaning in Prestwich.
The organisers of The Week have been busy publishing a consumer magazine, Vista, while the multiples have a Vision Van in Newcastle and a kids in the sun safety push.
Optics has fought long and hard for the ear of the public and NEHW offers a once-a-year opportunity to showcase eyecare but organisations can only do so much.Individual action is what the public will remember.
Take some time to support The Week in your practice.
