Comment: Change of focus for myopia control

While everyone has waited for a magic bullet to free the world of myopia it seems the humble refractive lens technology we all know and love (News, page 7) has life in it yet.

How the mainstream media will handle the news that short-sightedness can be controlled remains to be seen. It is sure to be seized upon in many countries around the world where the stigma of spectacle wear is as real as ever.

Many of the arguments for techniques such as orthokeratology have little to do with correction and more to do with the control of myopia in children. Researchers, off the record, will go as far as to suggest that in Asia it is parental pressure and not clinical trials keeping alive the dream of myopia control through orthokeratology.
