Independent opticians seem to be commanding ever more of people's attention these days with protection of the independent sector a universal goal. While it's reasonable to expect that the frame and lens companies would want to protect a group that makes up a large chunk of their customer base, even the multiples (see news) seem to acknowledge the value of the independent sector and the role it plays.
Optician has recently taken the decision to refocus its monthly business barometer, the Optician Index, around independents and regional chains. This is not only because it better describes the source of the data collected but also because independents have always embraced the idea of being an Index panel member.
One of the advantages of being part of the Index club is that confidential ad hoc comparisons of data are offered as a benefit of membership. This allows the progress made as a result of business decisions to be charted. This is often spectacular. The very nature of Index members means they are among the most pro-active and successful practices, but in the wider market not all share that success.
In the New Year Optician will be renewing its focus on helping independent practices through reader offers, the Optician Awards and by supporting the supporters. These companies often find that helping the independent sector is not always easy, as independents tend to want to do things their own way. Companies may have their own reasons for wanting to help you, but any help is good help.
