The state of independents

Mutual support between independent businesses is becoming a growing force in UK cities, towns and villages. At one extreme, gentrified areas have seen an explosion in delicatessens, chic clothes shops and 'real' butchers, while at the other, local people have fought to keep their local shops open.

In between are market towns and minor cities which are tiring of the homogenised high street. Consumers still want the everyday low prices offered by larger retailers but the value of difference, offered by independent traders, is having a resurgence.

Optician has always had a special place in its heart for independent practitioners and this year the focus on that sector has sharpened. Watch out for initiatives aimed at business and promoting the independent message.
