Independent opticians should help protect local high streets by joining forces with other traders to maintain footfall and the diversity of shopping customers want.
Speaking at the Sight Care Conference in Birmingham, James Lowman, chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), said that out-of-town developments now outnumbered those in town by four to one, despite evidence customers preferred independent shops.
He said the ACS's research showed people valued local shopping and convenience and were prepared to pay a premium to not have to travel. Lowman urged opticians to band together with hairdressers, butchers and other traders to become civic leaders.
