Perhaps it's the thought of the impending festive season but for the second week in a row I find myself writing an upbeat leader column for the journal.
December normally marks a 10-20 per cent fall in eye examinations so it is never the happiest time of the year but in the run up to those dark December days some good news has been trickling out.
Essilor first made a point of better market conditions when it reported its third quarter earnings (Optician 30.10.09). It said the UK was showing clear signs of recovery and noted a general global improvement.
Optician's own Index (27.11.09) confirmed Essilor's comments when the October figures came through showing a stabilisation of turnover and an increase in dispensing values. These trends were more marked across the quarter than they were month on month with eye exams up 6 per cent between July and October and dispensing up 12 per cent over the same period.
