Consultation on contacts

Rory Brogan

There's news just in that the UK regulator the General Optical Council is to consult on a new strategy to tackle the problem of illegal contact lens supply. It's not a new problem and it's not one with an immediate sulution, given that there is little possibility of tackling the illegal supply from websites outside the UK. In that sense the GOC's hands are pretty much tied, so it will instead have to look to encourage members of the public to choose more carefully, with education on appreciating the benefits of a supplier that gives clinical advice and aftercare. The tools the GOC does have at hand are responding to complaints in line with its prosecution protocol (ie UK-based suppliers who do not seek a valid Rx for example), promoting public awareness of aftercare and check ups and a voluntary code of practice for online sellers. It also plans to work more closely with the optical professions, manufacturers, consumer groups and other enforcement bodies. Clearly there is no immediate legal solution for practitioners who want to clamp down on overseas suppliers who provide product irrespective of current prescription, it's more about educating consumers of the risks associated with illegal sales. A period of consultation will run until the end of May.
