An outlet in the wine region of Napa Valley has been hit with fines around $6,000 for the illegal sale of decorative contact lenses http://napavalleyregister.com/news/local/3ae37b2e-5127-11e1-8f32-0019bb2963f4.html. The Doc of Rock shop was found to still be selling and dispensing contact lenses without prescription a month after being warned that it was illegal, in a case investigated by the California State Board of Optometry. The case again highlighted the need for correct fitting and education about contact lens care, with state officials and optometrists cautioning on the dangers of contact lenses sold on the black market. There is an additional and perhaps less well documended area of concern, highlighted by a Napa optometrist, and that is that the opaque areas of the lenses can obstruct peripheral vision, making them dangerous when driving.
