Life as a housebound person can be frustrating.
Isolation, boredom and lack of independence are some of the challenges faced every day. Imagine then, if on top of all this you are coping with diabetes too. Usually diabetics are well supported by their diabetic health care teams in their communities. So everyone knows the importance of digital retinal screening and the benefits of early treatment. Imagine the frustration for patients, carers and the community team then, to find that the national diabetic retinal screening committee have decided in their wisdom to exclude the housebound from all screening targets. Their rational is that treatment cannot be delivered in their own home so there is no point in screening! Perhaps it may have more to do with their inability to hit their targets if this vulnerable group of patients are included.
