The numbers in the document outlining the strategy behind Essilor's acquisition of the bit of Transitions it didn't already own are truly staggering but give an insight into the scale optics.
Optics can appear to be a small parochial business but looking at it from a global perspective is worthwhile now and again.
Essilor's $1.7bn acquisition of PPG's Intercast business and the share in Transitions it own is just one such occassion.
The presentation that accompanied the announcement shows that just 1.7bn of the world's 4.2bn people who require correction currently have it. Of those who have correction the vast majorty would be happy to have a photochromic option. There are also great opportunities in regions around the globe. While in South Africa the penetration of Transitions is 27% that figure is just 1% in Japan.
It's a big optical world out there.
