Before I start on Chris Evans I just want to reach out to Trevor McDonald's optician. Following our exposé on the veteran news presenter's spectacle horrors in the issue of January 21, we are delighted to see that Trevor is now sporting shiny new modern glasses. Coincidence? I don't think so! .jpg)
In the news a lot at the moment is Chris Evans. I'm pleased to be able to write about this chap as when I started as a young designer in Hong Kong and Evans was at the height of his fame, I marvelled at his use of comedy glasses and saw him as an icon of how a frame can work so well for a person.
Such was the power of his black-rimmed plastics that it even reached out to us 6,000 miles away.
I don't want to be cruel, but right now this frame, which has become his trademark is working even harder for him.
In an age when chunky retro acetates are enjoying the limelight, Evans no longer seems to be the comedian with silly glasses, but a well-dressed individual.
He really, really needs his specs. Just have a look at the man and imagine him without the frames and what you see is a very plain, nondescript individual.
This is a man who really wears glasses well. I can only commend him for his choice, there are so many people who get it wrong. So, Chris, to date you've done a good job.
However, I do have a problem. Morecombe and Wise, The Two Ronnies and, more recently, Vic Reeves and Harry Hill, have all done the comedian's retro black specs. I think the Ginger one should take a leaf out of Reeves' book.
Where once Vic Reeves had a comedy national health frame, he now wears a rather smart Oliver Peoples design, which looks fantastic - comedy glasses no more, but stylish chap about town.
Chris, you used to be my spectacle hero but it's time for a change. I could recommend you a fantastic frame, so let's see if the magic can work again. Trevor's optician - you don't happen to have Chris Evans on your books as well? Come and see me at Optrafair!
