Returning to the fray from a Royal Wedding, Bank Holiday double whammy, I can now report on a fresh study from the US which may give some encouragement to the fitting of children in contact lenses. Presented at the ARVO meeting this week (May 5), the study, co-authored by Jeffrey Walline, points out that after 10 years of CL wear, patients are equally successful wearing contact lenses whether first fitted as children or teenagers. The Johnson & Johnson funded research covered 175 soft CL wearers aged 17-30 of whom 49 per cent were fitted as children and 51 per cent as teenagers. Nearly 25 per cent of all were able to wear CLs for as many hours as they wanted. What is perhaps more impressive is the fact that 32 per cent of child fits reported rubbing their lenses, with 42 per cent rinsing them when cleaning, compared to 35 per cent and 45 per cent of teen fits. I would hazard a guess these findings would put many older contact lens wearers to shame. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory&tkr=JNJ:US&sid=aDOZdc9AEWVQ
