Andrew Petticrew is right to be concerned about older drivers' vision (Letters, June 8). The first problem to address is the ridiculous self-certification system for renewing driving licences every three years for the over-70s.

Does the DVLA really think that a 70-plus driver who wants to continue driving is going to declare that they can't meet the eyesight requirement? Last year an 85-year-old lady came in for what she claimed was her first ever eye test. She said that her driving licence was up for renewal and while she had happily ticked the eyesight requirement box on the form every three years since she turned 70, this time she was unsure and wanted a professional opinion.
