Children can sometimes ask searching questions. The other day I was asked what exactly I did every day in my dark room. I trotted out my answers but later turned to thinking whether I had really given the best answer I could have.

Today, optometrists are lucky to have much equipment at their disposal for various procedures. But the simple fact is that we are charged with two really quite basic tasks. The first is to check the refractive state of the eyes to make sure the patient can see as clearly and effectively as possible. The second is to check the health of the eyes, both externally and internally and if we see something wrong take further appropriate action. I thought I had put this across pretty well, but when I had finished using my direct ophthalmoscope, I was confronted with the question: so you can see all the inside of my eye with that torch, can you? I must confess I was taken aback by such an in-depth question but gave the honest answer - no not really, but I can see the bits in the middle that are the most important.
