Yesterday I listened to the news reports on our Prime Minister's vision for the future of the NHS. I am not stupid enough to think that Gordon Brown would make any announcement about eye care services directly but it was clear that he still believes the NHS only consist of doctors, hospitals and nurses.

By the end of the day, two of my patients had already commented that they thought that the NHS would still be in the same parlous state at the end of the year that it was in at the beginning. This year I want to offer my patients an NHS eye care service that is relevant to this century, a service that assists them to have good eyesight from the start of their lives to the end. I want to be able to give children the best start in life so that they may maximise their potential at school and not be hampered by poor vision. I want to be able to assist people in their middle years to attain their full potential at work and at play without being restrained by visual impairments of any kind. I want to be able to help people in later life maintain good visual health to keep their independence and live a full, active retirement.
