The arrival of yet another Which? report on the quality of sight tests intrigued me for several reasons.

After the previous report, optometrists argued that the results were erroneous because the examinees were members of the public who could not really know what to expect from a test. After this latest report, some comments on the optometry mailbase seemed to imply that using student optometrists as the examinees was not a good idea as they wouldn't have the experience to know what should be in an eye exam.

This sets me thinking whether anybody anywhere has any idea what should be in an eye examination. The saddest comment I saw was to the effect that the professional advisers should be exposed for bringing the profession into disrepute. Why should a desire to highlight bad practice be classed as bringing the profession into disrepute? Do we not all have a duty to expose the bad apples in our optometric barrel?
