I have been working in the NHS for many years now and was of the opinion that very little could surprise me when it came to stupid decisions. However, I underestimated the latest round of NHS managers. It would now seem that some bright spark has decided that any pre-registration optometrist or applicant to join the National Performers list should have to undergo a medical to acquire an Occupational Health Certificate.

We were informed locally that such a certificate could be obtained by having a medical at the local hospital occupational health department and would set the person or their prospective employer back a mere £30! For the life of me I cannot see why a private employee should need an occupational health certificate to carry out NHS sight tests.
