Richard Bacon’s letter to Hewitt reads:

‘I have been contacted by an Optometrist living in my constituency concerning the National Health Service reorganisation of the General Ophthalmic Service.

'I understand that the current proposals are to make the service cash limited which will inevitably cut down patient choice in order to reduce government spending. These proposals have been made without consultation with representatives of the profession and have been rejected by both the Welsh and Scottish assemblies.

'However following proper consultation by both the Welsh and Scottish assemblies they are both to implement their own packages, with the Scottish assembly, I believe, restoring free eye examinations with an altogether enhanced service.

'I should be most grateful to receive your comments on the lack of consultation process of the reorganisation of the General Ophthalmic Services.'
