There's a nice video here of a new fucntional contact lens that is being developed to monitor blood sugar without the need for needles courtesy of researchers at the University of Washington and Microsoft Research Connections: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK9F221JF48 This would mean that type 1 diabetics could pop a contact lens in without the need to collect something like six blood samples on a daily basis. researcher Babak Parviz explains that 'what's inside the blood, to a degree appears on the surface of the eye'. The team hopes to be able to use visuals for real-time feedback so that the wearer can be alerted when they need to stop eating or remind them when it's time for a snack.
