
Credit to the General Optical Council for admitting its current system for registering business results is an inconsistent application of its regulatory powers.
The application of powers has certainly been confusing over the years, with multiples being asked to register as individuals and multinational corporations being hit with measly £50,000 fines that can be written off in the blink of an eye.
Even now, rules around company registration are rather ambiguous. Let’s take a look at up-and-coming retailer Pop Specs, registered with the GOC. Neither of its founders, Lina Tejoprayitno and Daniel Barnes, are GOC-registered practitioners, but the company is registered with the regulator as a body corporate, where part of registration criteria stipulates that the majority of directors need to be registered as an optometrist, dispensing optician or contact lens optician.
