Setting your alarm clock for 4.00am is a sobering ritual for any sports participant. Not only is there the big event to think about but you know it will have to be done on a short night’s sleep.

That aside it’s also exciting to know you are doing something different that takes you out of your comfort zone and makes you feel you are living life to the full.

So it was that the evening before the Prudential Ride London 100 I set my alarm and settled down to sleep. This event is based on the cycle road race route used during the 2012 Olympics and offers an opportunity to cycle on car-free roads through the capital and out into the Surrey countryside. I also had the added impetus of knowing I was riding for a worthy charity in Blind Veterans UK.
