The Consulting Room: Newmedica's patient-centred eye care

Nigel Kirkpatrick discusses Newmedica’s activity at the recent 100% Optical trade show and urges further collaboration between optometry and ophthalmology

As an ophthalmologist and the medical director at Newmedica, I have long been an advocate for collaboration between ophthalmology and optometry. This year, the 100% Optical show, the UK’s largest optics event, provided a great platform to highlight the importance of this partnership in delivering patient-centred care.

It was a privilege to meet so many passionate optometrists, each committed to improving patient outcomes.

One key takeaway from the event is the undeniable value of collaboration. When optometrists and ophthalmologists work together, we create a more efficient, effective and holistic approach to eye care.

This partnership ensures that our patients receive timely access to the services they need, ultimately preventing sight loss and enhancing their quality of life.

During the show, Newmedica had the pleasure of hosting multiple continuing professional development (CPD) sessions for optometrists, presented by our expert consultants.

We also welcomed many optometrists to our stand, with our team holding wide-ranging conversations about how Newmedica provides a breadth of services, with timely access to care and treatment for patients across England.

We also talked about our partnership approach with community optometrists. The discussions were enriching, and the exchange of ideas were invaluable.

I presented a CPD session where I set out examples of this vital collaboration using patient case studies. One of those case studies involved a 49-year-old woman referred by a community optometrist. She had intraocular pressure (IOP) readings of R 27mmHg and L 26mmHg.

Despite no immediate evidence of glaucoma, there was a significant risk of visual impairment. Thanks to collaboration between the community optometrist and their ophthalmology counterparts, the patient received timely care and treatment.

After a thorough assessment and discussion, the patient was offered selective laser trabeculoplasty, which was later agreed upon and performed. The patient’s IOP was satisfactorily reduced and her follow-up care was planned meticulously. This case is a notable example of how a coordinated approach can lead to positive patient outcomes.

It also highlights the importance of referral refinement to reduce false positives and ensure that patients receive the right care at the right time. By following guidance from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Optometrists, and incorporating virtual reviews and senior clinical engagement, we can optimise patient care pathways.

Beyond glaucoma, my main stage presentations also touched on cataract surgery and age-related macular degeneration. These case studies further illustrated how integrated care can prevent sight loss and improve patient experiences.

My session also highlighted how greater integration between primary and secondary care is vital to deliver eye health services fit for the nation in future. Optometrists are truly a crucial part of the solution.

Their role in early detection of eye conditions and follow-up care is indispensable. By empowering patients and focusing on patient-centred care, we can also drive better outcomes and ensure that patient choice remains at the forefront of our efforts.

Reflecting on 100% Optical, the event showcased the best of the eye health sector. It reaffirmed the power of collaboration in eye care. Thank you to all the optometrists who participated in our sessions and visited our stand. Your dedication and insights are what make these collaborations so successful.

As we move forward, let us continue to build on these connections and strive for excellence in patient care. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.
