Do you know if the contact lenses you are wearing, should you be wearing contact lenses, offer protection against UV? I ask this in the light of recent research that reveals blocking UV light transmission may maintain the eye's macular pigment density, which in the long-term may protect against age-related macular degeneration http://finance.yahoo.com/news/uv-blocking-contact-lenses-may-090000397.html;_ylt=A2KJ3CZLQMdPRwMAS6PQtDMD. Under the study, presented at the recent BCLA Conference, 40 pre-presbyopic patients who had worn CLs for around five years were retrospectively examined. Twenty subjects who wore UV-blocking lenses were compared against another 20 who wore lenses with minimal UV-blocking and were found to have significantly greater macular pigment density levels. Lead author Professor James Wolffsohn explained that UV blocking lenses could play a contributory role in maintaining macular pigment density, but more research was required. The lenses should also be worn with sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat. Whether or not all contact lenses should be UV blocking as standard, this research is certainly enough to make me take UV blocking contact lenses a good deal more seriously.
