The View from the High Street

Over the years our practice in Sedley Place has seen its fair share of student optometrists at various stages of their training and at this time of year it's all change with new pre-registration OOs starting and current pre-regs passing their exams (hopefully!), and moving out into practice.

Over the years our practice in Sedley Place has seen its fair share of student optometrists at various stages of their training and at this time of year it's all change with new pre-registration OOs starting and current pre-regs passing their exams (hopefully!), and moving out into practice.

We also have a summer work-experience student, who is between second and third year, gaining experience in the real world and putting some of the theory acquired at university into practice. It's interesting to see the gradual realisation that optometry is not all about clinical expertise, but that communication and behavioural skills plus some understanding of how a business works are very important. It is encouraging that our student has become really engaged in these aspects of practice, but it is a pity that upon their return to university there is not more time available to reinforce the message.
