Time for a new toric trial?

Rory Brogan

As a silicone hydrogel (SiH) contact lens wearer of some experience (B+L, Menicon, CIBA, Sauflon, and CooperVision lenses all tried and tested) I'm quite excited by the thought that there's another lens to try out in Clariti 1day toric. This was launched by Sauflon at the BCLA in Manchester the other weekend and is a first-to-market product - ie the first SiH daily in toric form. My previous experiences with torics weren't anything to blog about - I really noticed them on my eyes and abandoned them for the comfort of daily disposables or monthly SiH lenses. With moderate astigmatism it was never a major problem, however it could be interesting to see if a daily toric in SiH would give better clarity of vision in addition to the obvious benefits of better oxygen perfomance. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say. I also believe that the Menicon flat pack daily disposable concept is due for launch later this year in Japan and will be making enquiries as to when these streamlined offerings will be available in the UK - it would be nice to see the finished item there as well.
