In his presentation at 100% Optical in early February, Doug Perkins from Specsavers referred to ‘us independents working together’ and showed a slide with the words ‘Working Collaboratively’ at the centre.
It is fair to say this rather bemused the AIO members present and raised more than a few questions. Whilst the Optical Confederation (of which AIO is not and will not be a member) figured on the slide there was an inherent suggestion that Doug Perkins’ proposed engagement was not necessarily through them and their member organisations.
In fact, the words ‘with one another as a sector’ and ‘effective lobbying and representation of the profession’ appeared as separate strands from the central theme. Does this mean there is a real desire on the part of Specsavers to engage constructively with organisations such as AIO?
