One question in particular crops up time and again in optics: why do people overlook their eye health? And, more importantly, what can we do about it?
Following feedback from AOP members we have been developing our range of resources to help promote optometry and eye health in the local community.
The billions of images and videos being uploaded and shared around the globe can be baffling. The challenge for us all – with any public-facing messages – is how to cut through the noise.
According to the Harvard Business Review, people remember only 20% of what they hear, 30% of what they see, but an incredible 70% of what they hear and see. With this in mind, we have developed two new videos to help raise awareness of eye health.
Our first animated video explaining sight tests was issued last year to complement new patient information and guidance. This month we launched our second video, ‘Love your eyes’, to help promote top tips for healthy eyes. Optician readers are welcome to download the video to embed in their practice website or play in practice waiting rooms. The video was supported with a new poster, ‘Show your eyes some love this Valentine’s’, sent out to our members in January.

December’s ‘Make eye health your new year’s resolution poster also proved popular and we were delighted to see photos of the poster in practice windows. AOP member, David Dowley from York, said: “The new poster has pride of place in our window, we added it to our website – it’s nice to promote eye health rather than just prices for a change.”
We’ve also launched our new eye care blogs on topical patient issues. Recent updates include eye protection for the slopes, the importance of a healthy diet and the horrors of what may be lurking on your mascara brush.
