Tom Davies finds that the positives from attending big trade shows remains worth the outlay and effort

Greetings from the US. I’ve been here for almost six weeks on an American odyssey and, quite honestly, I can’t wait to get back to dear old blighty. When I closed my factory in China, I thought that would be the end of my travelling years, and yet it is only April and I’ve done more travelling this year than the average person does in a decade. This is mostly because my company is spread around the world and sometimes you’ve just got to be there.

I started this trip in New York for the Vision Expo East. I had 15 staff fly in from various American states and the UK. We hosted parties, training events and, of course, exhibited at the actual show. With a price tag of around $100,000, you can’t blame me for getting the sales numbers almost hourly during the event. It can be quite nerve-racking.
