September 2014 is a ground-breaking month and I’m not referring to the selfish indulgence that is the Scottish referendum. No. I’m referring to the Call to Action declared on eyecare services by NHS England. Optometry as a profession and optics as an industry could be on the cusp of an epoch like change. A change where the true potential of a degree educated health care discipline reaches for its true role.
Can we see optometrists as the GP of the eye? Can we see optometrist specialists taking a place in the community? Could we see GP’s referring all their eye patients to optometrists and, heaven forbid, optometrists referring to other optometrists for specialist diagnosis and treatment?
