Delays in reclaiming NHS fees for General Ophthalmic Services have hit the profession hard in recent months. As the situation rumbles on, Simon Jones reports on the sector’s response and how the issue can be resolved

Primary Care Support England (PCSE) services provided by FTSE 100 outsourcer, Capita have been slammed by the Optical Confederation in a letter to the head of NHS England, Simon Stevens.

The letter, also sent to Optician, set out the confederation’s serious concerns with how services are being delivered by Capita for NHS England.

‘Ophthalmic contractors have suffered a serious and significant financial impact and reduction in service levels since the migration of the processing of General Ophthalmic Services claims to the PCSE offices in Leeds and Preston started earlier this year,’ said the Optical Confederation in its letter.

‘The service is still not fit for purpose, despite our representatives having spent considerable time working with Capita and the NHS England service management team to explain the issues and agree to monitor a recovery plan that was produced by Capita on May 6 2016.’
