Surveys generally show that high street opticians score highly for satisfied customers but those that stand out succeed in making the client feel valued. David Craik reports

It is the ‘best coffee shop in town’ with beverages served in bone china cups and biscuits on hand as well.

But it isn’t a Costa or a Starbucks keeping the good people of the Yorkshire town of Holmfirth happy – it’s an optician.

‘Being able to offer our customers something nice to drink and eat is all part of our one hour long dispensing experience,’ says Sheryl Doe, managing director, Dispensing at Allegro Optical. ‘As an independent, we cannot compete on price so customer service is where we have to excel.’

Of course, its customer service offering doesn’t just revolve around a well brewed Americano and shortbread. It takes in detailed testing and dispensing consultations, feedback and the use of technology.
