Angioid streaks
Angioid streaks are a rare defect of Bruch’s membrane, of variable in colour and pigmentation; ranging from deep red, to grey, to darkly pigmented. They are associated with a variety of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) abnormalities and are an important cause of non-age related choroidal neovascularization and macular atrophy, causing loss of central vision. Bruch’s membrane is external to the RPE, forms part of the RPE basement membrane and is the site of many pathological changes associated with age related macular degeneration. Bruch’s membrane is a complex sandwich of collagen and elastic tissue.
