Colour vision testing presents specific challenges for selecting an appropriate protocol, the control of environmental lighting conditions and also the interpretation of test observations. A key element relating to colour vision testing involves processes which relate to risk of colour misidentification, for example in transportation networks such as rail and aircraft.

Consequently the Health and Safety Executive has issued general guidance for employers as to appropriate testing policy1 in which any requirements for colour vision testing have to be justified. In addition, specific guidance is provided which relates to the process of colour vision examination.2
