Light emitting diodes are a relatively new technology - with solid state devices emitting infra-red light first reported in 1955 and the first visible light solid state device being developed in 1962.
As the range and performance of LED products continues to develop, these will increasingly be incorporated into specialist products within the field of vision testing and also services provided to remedy various aspects of low vision.
It is relevant, initially, to review some of the basic science of LEDs in order to appreciate the potential benefits of LEDs in general and be aware of applications where conventional light sources may retain specific advantages.
