Energy saving compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) light bulbs have been in the news a lot recently. Because of their greater electrical efficiency compared to conventional tungsten filament bulbs, they are being promoted as the ‘green’ solution for artificial lighting. For example, a CFL bulb of 11-watt rating may be labelled as equivalent to a 60-watt tungsten bulb (Figure 1).
