Echoes of the Past: The right to sell spectacles

Echoes of the past travels back in time to the 1960s this week with a look at the October 30 edition from 1964. Aired on BBC One that day was Sykes and Two Birthdays and the Kathy Kirby Show.

The journal’s news pages are the focus this week. One particularly interesting report stemmed from US ophthalmologist Christopher Wood and his belief that ophthalmologists should be prohibited from selling frames on ethical grounds.

Wood wrote a letter to an ophthalmology journal stating that in 1962, half of ophthalmologists in the US were involved in the business of selling glasses and were motivated by avarice.
