The Eye Health Awards for Allied Healthcare Professionals, supported by Novartis and Alcon, form part of the Excellence in Ophthalmology programme and aim to foster and share innovation and the development of the highest standards of patient care in eye health. In anticipation of next year’s conference, to be held again in Birmingham in March 2014, the organisers are now looking for new entries to the awards.
Calling all optometrists and opticians
Last year, the winning entries were from Reena Chana (Croydon University Hospital) who presented a case on the Orthoptic Stroke Service, and Jane Waller and Ben Royal (combined entry; Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust), who presented their approach to nurse and physiologist-led review clinics. The winning entries each received an educational grant. Both of these, albeit in different ways, showed clearly how allied health professionals are able to offer good access from the community, and a dedicated skill-set specific to a particular condition or assessment requirement. Ultimately, such schemes provide a service that may not only reduce the burden upon secondary care services, but enhance patient care. This might be by improving compliance, attendance, or by spreading the workload between professional disciplines in a way that improves the overall service required.
