Refractive surgery is increasingly popular and with advances in equipment, technology, skills and research it has become safer and more effective. The most popular form of refractive surgery for spectacle independence remains laser vision correction in the form of Lasik or Lasek. However, there is a proportion of patients for whom this form of surgery is not suitable. They include those with higher levels of refractive error, insufficient corneal thickness, abnormal topography with predisposition to ectasia and dry eye.
The alternative has traditionally been for the patient to remain in glasses or contact lenses. However, there is a safe and effective alternative for many in the form of a contact lens implanted within the eye.
